The problem isn't passionate interest, it's a lack of civility and respect towards your fellow citizens. If I don't like something on someone elses property it's none of my business and I hope they respect me the same way. For public lands following rules and respecting use for all citizens is vital. The state and town have public lands for golfers, skiers, boaters, swimmers, fishermen, hunters, hikers and many more. The Nod Brook WMA is accessible for walking, fishing and boating except for sanctioned field trial events which are clearly posted. It is one of two areas in the state for such use.
The stated argument that "noise" from shooting is damageing to the environment in that area is just a figleaf. There is plenty of noise from the state police shooting range just across the river and lots of noise from RT10 and Nod Road.
The Nod Brook WMA was dedicated for dog training well before I moved to simsbury 20 years ago. It's as much a part of town as the Ethel Walker woods. The dog training and competion is a diverse sport that adds interest to the town. Interestingly New Milford just had to pass a town ordinance further protecting farmers from harassment by new residents complaining about the ordinary smells and noise from farming. Newcomers don't get special privileges because their houses cost a lot or they are the loudest. There are only two or three residences bordering on the WMA. The townhouses have been there a long time and are at the far end of the WMA well away from any shooting noise. The other new house just built on the south end clearly the owners should have been aware of the use of the area when the house was built. So who is really affected by this!
