Poor Farm - June 21 - Open to public - 2008/06/12 09:02
Friends of Town Farm Dairy announces 2008 Open Farm Day
Saturday, June 21st
On the farm at 73 Wolcott Road, Simsbury
Open Farm Day is a celebration of Town Farm Dairy’s unique history and distinction as Simsbury’s last working dairy farm and one of only two certified organic dairy farms in Connecticut. It is the only organic dairy farm in the state with a complete production process on premises – that is, milk production goes from udder to bottle on site.
The day’s events kick off with Brad Davis of 1360 WDRC AM broadcasting his Town Meeting of the Air live from the farm from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The public is welcome to come to the farm to listen to Brad and talk with him during his broadcast, and to enjoy a free continental breakfast.
Other activities begin at 9:00 AM, including children’s games and tours of the dairy operations, as well as demonstrations on cow milking, making butter and kefir, blending herbal teas, drying and storing herbs, and making goat milk soap. There will also be a farmer’s market with local products for sale including flowers, vegetables, herbs, baked goods, organic coffee, garlic scapes, soaps, and hand-made chocolate truffles.
The farm’s retail store will be open during the event, with whole milk, 1% milk, chocolate milk, heavy cream, and ice cream available for sale. It’s all farm-fresh and organic.
Parking is free, and all activities continue until 2:00 pm.
Live music will be provided by the contradance band Heart’s Ease.
The event will be held rain or shine, so stop by to meet the cows and take home some local organic milk and ice cream!
