Re:NEW, FUN, EXCITING, IN SIMSBURY? - 2008/02/26 09:10 OK, so this is the problem -- "MY kid would NEVER....." Well, guess what? YOUR kid WOULD.
And MY kid, too. And that nice innocent little girl who babysits. And.....

Too many parents think that there are GOOD kids (ie THEIR kids) and all those other kids whose parents don't care, and who do bad things like grind and this attitude is just divisive.

I do not condone the dirty dancing, but they are just kids All of our kids. And they are ALL over exposed to our hypersexualized, drug infused, consumer culture.Sometimes the kids that appear so grounded are the very ones that smoke pot, or get pregnant, or get arrested or, tragically, end their lives.

Re:NEW, FUN, EXCITING, IN SIMSBURY? - 2008/02/26 10:54 Its nice when you come out of the shadows Bluebird.

I agree, none of our kids are perfect. My kids have never "been the popular ones" and I thank God for that every day because I think that actually takes pressure off of them to "fit in". One of the saddest parts is that its gotten way down (no pun intended) to the elementary school. Anyone who thinks the younger kids are sweet and innocent hasn't stepped foot in one of those schools for a long, long time. While some S&I kids still remain, popularity, status and yes, hypersexualization have reared their ugly heads as well and it gets vicious. I am amazed at the rudeness and disrespect I hear coming out of some of these kids mouths. If I ever talked like that to a teacher I wouldn't be typing this today. My parents would have taken care of that.

Re:NEW, FUN, EXCITING, IN SIMSBURY? - 2008/02/26 18:11 Now, now, WE weren't talking or rather I was not talking about MY kid being perfect..I said "MY kid" would never dirty dance at the school....and HE wouldn't ...
AND...I was mentioning this to a Simsbury Mom today who's daughter graduated 05', and this woman remembers her daughter going to "ONE" school dance where the kids were dancing like that, and she never went back to another dance there again! She hated it, she was there to actually dance....Not get groped, etc.
And I'm not saying my kid is perfect, no one's are..although he is a really good kid....I am not blind.....I have been there raising him, directing, admonishing, and making sure he is taking responsibility when needed to correct his actions.

BTW....Who does chaperon the school dances? Rumor has it that it is the teacher's....so how did the dancing at the school get way off track to where it is now?

I still like the idea of parents doing the chaperoning and being allowed to see the kids dancing like that...

Really, I know and am aware even for my own self in the world we live in with all the hyper this and that that it is difficult...that sometimes we ...do what we do...BUT, it doesn't have to be done in the schools...If my kid boycotted the dance because he wasn't allowed to do "dirty dancing", well I would take a good look at the son I was trying to raise and think again.......GG

Re:NEW, FUN, EXCITING, IN SIMSBURY? - 2008/02/26 19:45 Well, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.
So there ya go, someone's parents out there invented the term 4/20.

But I don't smoke pot and never have, so yeah

I only went to 2 high school dances when I was in SHS (graduated in 2000) and it was mostly dirty dancing then. I wonder how bad it's gotten now...well, actually, I would rather not know!

I work at a middle school now and I always hear the 8th grade boys in the hallway or at lunch talk about "bagging" girls which I guess means hooking-up/making-out. I have a feeling they are all talk for the most part but you never know these days. There's even a couple students that I have overheard talk about smoking pot, but I know for a fact that their parents are horrible parents, so that has something to do with it (morals). Then again there's the other end of the stick. One of the high school guys that I work with after school has been dating a girl for about a year and I just found out that they've never kissed because he says it'll just lead to other things and that's not something they want right now.

BTW, what's this purse snatching? I find that quite funny!

Re:NEW, FUN, EXCITING, IN SIMSBURY? - 2008/02/26 20:36 Hi Thorgs!

Actually the purse snatching story is on the "home" page on this site...you'll find it.....and it was not a laughing matter....actually I just read it myself to see what it said, and I did not know about the guy hitting three cars, etc.
You had a lot of interesting things in your post...nice to hear some actually being open about standing up for high morals...that is not an easy thing to do, esp. with "sex" everywhere..GG

Re:FINAL STRAW? DIRTY DANCING - 2008/02/28 17:34 I was thinking we have brought this topic up before on this site, and I guess, Whatever will be, will be..I'm just a tiny speck of nothing in the whole realm of things...I can not help with any of this situation anyway....

However, It would be interesting to me (maybe other's as well?), What WAS the final straw to where the School officials said "NO" to any more of this kind of dancing?

I am "in the know" with some of the teacher's, etc. and one I talked to today did confirm that parents do not chaperon the dances. Esp. of course because NO kid would then attend! But this person said they have chaperoned some dances where the kids were behaving "dirty" and this teacher was told by administration to leave the kids alone, that they were allowed to dance like that. This teacher said the boys would sandwich a gal and "grind" her...or two girls and one guy, or a couple, etc...This teacher referred what the kids were doing to "dry "blank"...ing"...(you know "F" word) ....(of which we did know from prior discussions on here, etc.)
SO.....what was the last straw..Why NOW did the administration finally realize, and say no more, esp. now that the kids all (some) got use to dancing like this...worse, and worse, and worse, as time went on, I'm sure! What's the saying "Give them an inch, and they'll take two..three....etc......Maybe that's what happened...the kids took advantage, which I can understand.....BUT.....well Hindsight being 50/50...daah!
This teacher said "good" cancel the dances....
Shame the kids have no understanding, it seems for public decency....and seems to me the administration should have nipped it in the bud WAY at the beginning. Now the kids are use to dancing this way, and of course are rebelling....Shame, all around!
Let the "NO" be NO and maybe, in time the kids will have their dances back, and re learn the "right" way to dance in public....OR, well, No more dances kids...and Myself being over 40...there are other dance moves that ARE great to do with others and still have a REALLY GOOD time! Are you kidding, please......GG
