Mountain Lion? in woods in backyard - 2007/08/22 09:38 hi everyone,

we live in the northern part of town and i think we have a mountain lion / cougar / bobcat hanging out in the woods in our backyard... our next door neighbor saw what she said was a mountain lion in her backyard.. i saw what looked like a large gold colored animal moving from branch to branch in a tree a couple of weeks ago.. when i went closer to investigate, it was either hiding so well i could not see it - or it was gone..

this weekend, we found a bunch of feathers near the same area of woods where i saw the animal in the tree... it looked like a large bird had just been destroyed and all that was left were a pile of feathers...

anyway, we have a small dog... we have been keeping him near us when we are outside and not letting him outside alone... also we have not been letting him near that portion of the woods at all.. we also have a babygirl.. when she is like 2-3 yrs. old, etc.. we will keep an eye on her and keep her away from that part of the woods as well..

besides that - is there anything else we should / could do about this??? we definitely appreciate the wildlife and don't want someone killing any animals.... is there a way to make the cat leave the area ??? scare it away or something???? will it attack our pet or child in broad daylight if we are nearby?????

not sure anyone will know the answers to these kinds of questions but figured i would give it a shot..

thank you

Re:Mountain Lion? in woods in backyard - 2007/08/22 13:28 It is my understanding that there are bobcats in the area. In fact, the Simsbury Post (or one of those free weekly papers) just had a photo of one in someone's back yard.

I don't believe there are mountain lions in New England.

there are definitely mountain lions in CT... i know - because i saw one close up last year... i was driving near batterson state park in farmington - on the road that takes you from farmington to new britain - i forget the name of the road.... anyway, i HUGE mountain lion crossed the street right in front of my slow moving car.. like 30 ft. away and i had a perfect view of it.. and there is no way it was a bobcat... it was as big as a rottweiler if not bigger, was completely gold in color.. had a cats head.. huge paws.... and it walked across the street at a good pace, but slow enough that i stopped the car and was like - wow.. no one is going to believe me.. i got out and looked into the woods and it was completely gone..

Re:Mountain Lion? in woods in backyard - 2007/08/22 15:18 According to CT DEP there has never been any proven sightings, photos, tracks, droppings, or any evidence to the contrary. It would be nice to prove it one way or the other. The D.E.P states that they do not believe any exist. I for 1 would love to have it proven true.

well unless i am either Insane, on some hallucinogenic drugs, both, or maybe if bobcats can be bigger than large dogs and can be completely gold in color - then i swear to God i saw a mountain lion cross the street right in front of me. and i would bet my life on it.

Re:Mountain Lion? in woods in backyard - 2007/08/22 15:40 They can be a very blond color. Dino Sore was right there was a great photo of a bob cat laying in someones yard, looks like it maybe three feet long and weighed maybe 30 pounds but the photo was the cat laying down.
