Simsbury History? - 2007/06/03 12:32 Hello again! I have not posted on this site for sometime, however I have like many of you been lurking behind the scenes. Why though? This after all is our town too! I've been living in Simsbury since 73'.
I have seen the Town change from the days when just down the road from me were the rows and rows of corn being grown for the cows to feed on, which was replaced years ago by a street now known as Smokey Ridge. Oh, the stories the people of this town have to share! What history! Where are all these people, where are their stories to the community? I remember Hop Meadow street before the new fancy hotels were created, the old grey house, now a hotel which was known to be haunted. When we were teenagers, boy did we have some stories to tell! I love to go into the post office on Hop Meadow street or Roland's barber shop in Tariffville, "The Valley Barber shop", and look at all the pictures from long long ago adorning their walls. Yes the town has changed, some would say for the better, some would not! I know I mostly miss the part of Simsbury history that was taken away due to growth and progress and a changing time! Time to go do some gardening in the yard before the rain comes! GG

Re:Simsbury History? - 2007/06/03 12:54 That is just too funny! Nice to meet you Thorgs! Oh yes, I remember one time I brought some "corn" home thinking it was for humans. Well, it took absolutely forever to cook. Come to find it was cow corn. And, no we didnt eat it, our parents stepped in to give some helpful assistance! Hey that is what happens when you are young! The fields of Smokey Ridge back then in the winter were great too, at least for those with snow mobiles! GG

Re:Simsbury History? - 2007/06/03 13:07 Speaking of corn - it looks like that is what has been planted in the tobacco fields along Hoskins across from NewBerry Court. Does corn draw out pesticides? ___________________

Re:Simsbury History? - 2007/06/03 13:42 Newberry Court, is that down by Clifton Drive? Doesn't that field usually have tobacco planted? Oh, the days of working the tobacco fields...yuck! I once refused to get off the bus and back to work because it was so hot out. The manager said if I didnt get off the bus and back to work then I was fired, well, i guess I was fired, and stayed on the bus! That was one heck of a tough, hot job! GG

Re:Simsbury History? - 2007/06/03 16:01 There is quite a bit of history associated with Pettibone's Tavern. It once had a tunnel between the restaurant (I believe it was a home at the time) and the home across the street. It was used as part of the Underground Railroad in Civil War era. And there is more because Simsbury goes back to colonial times. ___________________
