Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/24 16:40 Did you read the apology from the shooters family? I dont ever remember the family members of any crime coming forward and expressing their sorrow. I felt better after I read that article from the parents and the sister. They were just as dumbfounded and shocked. I dont know why it made me feel better,....I guess it made me feel that the shooters family members were normal and kind people and felt horrible just like us. It was a yahoo story.

Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/24 18:03 Yeah I heard that the family was in complete shock and didn't even see this coming. Their child must have acted differently when he was around them.

Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/25 16:13 I hear that the school wants to rename a certain wing in the building after the heroic Professor that was killed while blocking the doorway from the shooter. They should rename alot of things after him.

It is amazing that they can fire Imus for some insensitive cracks on the radio, and the system failed in stopping this kid from buying a gun and not inforcing some sort of mental health care.

Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/25 20:39 I'm glad you mentioned the letter from Cho's family. I didn't hear about that but I always considered them victims of this tragedy as well, albeit in a different way. During the constant media coverage it was mentioned how this family was hard working and trying to put their kids through college. I looked at it totally different than the Columbine kids who had things in plain sight for their parents to see, only for it to be ignored.

As for bullying, its even worse now with cyber-bullying and there are articles relatively frequent articles about suicides due to the constant barrage on some of these kids. I'm proud of you Thorgs for doing what you can to stem the tide. I do think that some adults are guilty of it but rationalize it (cheerleading anyone) and that others are just to busy to notice it happening around them.

Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/25 23:52 Well, I thought I'd let you know that Squadron Line now has two cameras in each hallway. Kind of tacky looking if you ask me. I guess the Queen finally took security seriously after the VT shootings. They say that doors are always locked except for the enterence. I found that funny since the back door at Squadron always sticks so it never locks unless you pull the door closed...and no one takes the time to notice or do that, but it did save me a trip from walking all the way around to the front to get into the school today!

Here's a letter from the Queen.

April 23, 2007

Dear Parents,

As a school community we are shocked and saddened by the tragedy that occurred at Virginia Tech last week. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were lost as well as to the students, faculty and staff at Virginia Tech. The impact of the tragedy at Virginia Tech is far reaching and will certainly extend well beyond the university's walls.

As a parent of a Simsbury student, you are no doubt wondering about the safety of your child during school hours. We are mindful of your concerns and of the need to continually review our communications and safety procedures. The Simsbury Public Schools have security and safety procedures in place should an unauthorized activity or emergency occur within our schools. Below you will find a list of measures we have taken to ensure the safety of your children:

• Fire drills are conducted on a monthly basis and lockdown drills are conducted twice per year in each of our schools.
• Specific procedures have been communicated to staff regarding how to respond in the case of a building emergency, and communication systems are tested periodically.
• Exterior doors, except the main entrance doors, are locked while school is in session.
• Visitors are required to check in at the main office upon entering the buildings.
• Security cameras have been installed in three of our schools with installations to be completed in the remaining four sites in the spring and summer of 2007.
• School system administrators continue to be in regular communication with our local police and fire department first responders relative to the procedures and systems in place in our schools should an emergency arise.

Effective communication among staff and students, as well as to parents and community agencies, is critical in any emergency situation. To that end, we will implement an emergency notification system beginning with the 2007-08 school year which will include voice, email and text messaging.

Finally, I want to encourage you to contact your child's teacher or a school administrator if your child is expressing any lingering concerns about his or her own safety in the school setting. Our support staff stands ready to assist you and your child in the aftermath of this national tragedy.

Sincerely,

Your Queen

Re:A Moment of Silence - Again - 2007/04/26 10:37 Nice Touch with the signature on the letter Thorgs.....

Next we'll have Town Criers that ring the bell and announce the edicts.

But really - I am glad that the school has cameras. They protect everybody - including staff - from dangerous situations, to things needing intervention, and to whether something be a real or false accusation.

It is to bad that we have to get to this point though - Big Brother and all - <hint mode>even if it is 23 years behind schedule.</hint mode>.
