Re:ETHEL WALKER LAND DEAL - 2006/11/01 08:42
Thanks Joan.
C'mon folks. It is time to wake up on this issue. Why should we all pay for this land to bail out EW school? When KTW was first formed and when they first said they found a solution, it was never said that the town would foot the MAJORITY of the bill. It was presented as TPL would raise funds, and the town would fill the gap to the purchase price. Turns out the gap was a canyon.
I keep hearing that the aquifer covers 70% of water in the town. But what you have to understand is that is Aquarion. Isn't it Aquarion's job to protect the water supply for their customers? It certainly isn't my job - I have a well and I sure don't see the town trying to protect my well from the encroachment of pesticides/herbicides from nearby tobacco fields. Why should I pay to protect somebody else's water - they are not spending a dime to protect mine!
What is the base cause here. First it was KTW because they did not want to see a large development go up on the land. After they were formed and came out with their agenda, they "found" a reason - the aquifer. It wasn't the aquifer first though. It was the development of the land. And then they found the aquifer to base their arguments on. But I will say that whatever the reason, at least KTW tried to work out a deal as opposed to other groups.
A few months back, SimsburyInfo4U posted on this subject. Now we all know that this poster is a part of SHARE. So now we have the confluence of SHARE and KTW. And as soon as that happened, wouldn't you know it - the "scare" tactics about the aquifer started. It isn't difficult to guess where that slimy influence came from.
Vote NO on this. We can't afford it. We get NO benefit from it as a town as a whole. Make the people whose water is supposedly at risk pay for it themselves. If not, then I propose that the town pay to have water/sewer piped to all homes in Simsbury who are still on well/septic - at taxpayer expense. Fair's fair.
