Re:Pay for Play is up to $150.00 per child per sport last year it was $75.00 - 2006/10/12 20:01
When I was at SHS, I do not recall a pay for play system, but do recall paying a small fee for the privelege to park at the high school (25 plus years ago). My local high school, one of 17 in the county, does not have a "pay for play" system per se, we have booster clubs for every sport that helps support each team. Families are asked to join the club, anywhere from 100 to 250, but do not have to pay any fees to be on the team, each family is asked to raise anywhere from 200 to 1000 for the club to fund the programs. The county provides very little to each school. We have to pay to reimburse the county for the construction of the football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and soccer fields and also payback a "Equipment purchased" fee each year. My kids have played sports all thru high school and as a small businessman, I am always hit up for a sponsorship of one team or another. I support different teams based on the kids that are playing a sport I know, but also realize that all the same businesses are being hit up for each sport also. Technically our pay to play is at least the same as SHS. We have 7 Assistant principals plus one Principal at our school (3500 students) So I think what has happened is that some educatioanl study was completed and your school will have so many assistants to the number of students. I think that most school districts are in the same boat thru out the USA and it is a unfortunate that this has occurred, but in this day and age of high tech sports and athletic scholarships, it was bound to happen. By the way, it is not just the sports teams that have this problem , our award winning band requires each member to raise $1500 to $2000 in order to travel to Macy's parade or Rose Bowl and all academic clubs have dues of anywhere from $25 to $75.00 o belong. It has probably cost me over last 6 years, $2400.00 to have my kids play sports, participate in clubs, etc (this does not even include so far 7 prom/hc dresses for my daughters.)
