I don't know what grade she's in but if its elementary, I'd e-mail the teacher to let her know the situation. The teacher may be able to help in a subtle way by seating your daughter with some nice children she may become friendly with, etc. The teacher can also watch to make sure your daughter doesn't totally withdraw.

As for calling the buddy's mom. Unless you are very good friends, I wouldn't do it. I've found that a lot of parents have blinders on when it comes to their kids and if that's the case here, you will only get more frustrated. Also, if the other mom makes her daughter "play" with yours, the kid's resentment may come out so much that it ends up hurting your daughter more.

If your daughter is older than elementary, have her join some afterschool activities. She will end up meeting other kids that have similar interests and they may click. One of my children was very withdrawn at our elementary school but blossomed when she went to HJMS and met kids she didn't know before. Of course its easier when you don't have to drive them accross town to be with their friends but the pay off's worth the time and gas.

Re:Happy First Day of School - 2006/09/01 11:30 My daughter is in 5th grade @ Latimer Lane. She is originally from China & very smart. She is also very small for her age. She's had alot of obsticles to get through & things have been tough for her.

I left a message for her teacher. We already spoke before school opened & I gave her some background information on my daughter - about the problems she had in the past with bullying & just kids in general.

She starts back with Girl Scouts in a few weeks. She is also starting a new CCD class. I don't work so we have to watch $$$. But I am going to look at different things that get sent home with afterschool activities that she might enjoy. She loves to sing & a few years ago she was in a play. I think that I remember that there is a chorus group that kids in her class last year were in - maybe she would like to do that - hopefully it won't mess up the Girl Scouts.

Re:Happy First Day of School - 2006/09/02 10:00 After my daughter got home from school yesterday, I asked what she did during recess. She did hang around with the bunch of girls but all she did was following them around.

I got a call from my daughter's teacher late yesterday afternoon. She talked to me for about half an hour.

At first she didn't understand what I was talking about. During free time yesterday, she had seen my daughter playing with the girl that is giving her the problems. I told her that she will - if it is one-on-one and no one else is around. But if there are others - my daughter is left behind.

She came up with the idea of working on relationships in the classroom. She is going to start with my daughter, then add her friend, then add some of the other classmates too. Afterwards, make small groups of the kids. In the groups, the kids will be working on communication skills with each other, how to socialize when there are a bunch of kids, and not leaving anyone out just because they are more kids around. She said that she might even do it during a lunch period so the kids get used to having a conversation within the group.

I was glad that she is taken the lead to do something about it. She was very glad that I called & later told my daughter about it. At first she didn't like the idea that I called her teacher but now feels better about it.
