Board of Education - June 27, 2006 - 2006/08/22 19:30 Board of Education – June 27, 2006

As a longtime resident of Simsbury and having my four children go through the Simsbury school system during a very permissive time, I would like to applaud Dr. Diane Ullman and the administration for taking a strong stand against teenage drinking. In spite of much public debate the school system did what was proper by letting the children know that there are consequences for their actions. Debate about the increased use of alcohol nationwide by underage children has been in the headlines for years and the debate will continue. The adults of Simsbury have to take a strong stand against underage drinking. The consumption of alcohol is just one part of the equation. The investigation should continue into who supplied the alcohol, what action was taken by the limousine company when alcohol was consumed, who supplied the coolers and ice and where were the huge amounts of alcohol purchased? Who enabled the children to consume the alcohol? Those people should be interrogated. We the people in Simsbury have not set a good example by allowing alcohol consumption on town-owned property. All golfing events at Simsbury Farms have alcohol and alcohol is permitted on all town property. The Board of Selectmen and the Zoning Commission have permitted the distribution of alcohol at all events in Eno Hall and Iron horse Boulevard. The town has condoned the distribution of alcohol as an integral part of fundraising events. Parents have distributed alcohol at underage parties. One alcoholic beverage consumed with prescription drugs and/or many over the counter drugs impair a persons reaction and sometimes with devastating consequences. Everyone has to consider underage drinking as an epidemic, to be cured one step at a time. The school system has taken the first step. It is time that the other boards, commissions and parents follow their lead.
